Digital at Cairn Oil and Gas: Rig Schedule Optimization with SAP

Attend this session to hear about the process Cairn Oil & Gas went through to improve its wells. Well workover activity planning through rigs were done by the petroleum engineering function based on past experience and best human judgement. Currently, there are three rigs at the MBA field, which execute the workovers across 299 producing wells. Cairn Oil & Gas was looking for a scientific solution for optimizing the schedules for the rig and sequencing of well workovers with the objective of maximizing cumulative production gain. Using a nonlinear heuristic model optimizer and SAP Cloud platform, workovers on the wells are planned based on multiple parameters: rig time to travel, total workover time, production gains expected, and availability of inventory. This change was tested in a controlled state, resulting in huge production upside for one rig scenario. Buoyed by the result of the proof of concept, Cairn Oil & Gas decided to productionize it. The SAP Innovative Business Solution team is implementing the scenario and it is expected to go live by June 30. As part of the project, SAP Cloud Platform is also being used to integrate with Cairn Oil & Gas upstream-specific systems, like Digital Oilfield (DOF) and SWIFT system, which managed the well workover details.
